BRITISH PRIMARY SCHOOL

International School Andalucía is a British school which teaches the British curriculum in Primary, an international vocation based on the teaching of languages, as well as integrating programmes which are committed to the personal growth of the pupil in all aspects. We believe that this is a crucial stage of education for any child, so we offer a personalised education which is adapted to the individual academic and developmental needs of each child.

British Primary Curriculum up to the age of 10

Our curriculum during the Primary Years focuses on key areas such as mathematics, science, history, geography and art, with special attention to the learning of English as a first language.

Our methodology at this stage is different, students learn through practice and understanding, rather than memorisation. In addition, in primary school, we have developed an approach to learning based on topics (themes), which are developed in various subjects in a cross-cutting manner. Through topics, we develop the entire curriculum during the primary school years.

The topics are different and progressively more complex, allowing children to develop key skills and knowledge, while covering the content of the curriculum in a way that is interesting to them.

This methodology allows us to offer a personalised education, adapted to the development of the pupil’s maturity and abilities. It is a personalised approach, the aim of which is for students to take the lead in their learning. This encourages not only a love of learning and research, but also greater independence.

Equivalence with the British system

The courses at our British Primary School are based on dynamic, practical and immersive lessons, encouraging experiential learning. The academic process is based on the British curriculum, divided into two basic cycles, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2.

Key Stage 1

Key Stage 1 covers years 1 and 2 of the British education system, equivalent to the 3rd year of Infant and 1st year of Primary Education in Spain, at this stage, children are between 5 and 7 years old.

The curriculum focuses on developing fundamental skills in reading, writing, mathematics and science. In addition, personal and social development, physical education, creativity through art and design, and communication skills are promoted. Special emphasis is placed on literacy and numeracy to lay a solid foundation for future learning.

Key Stage 2

Key Stage 2 comprises years 3 to 6 of the British education system, corresponding to the stage from 2nd to 5th Primary Education in the Spanish system, covering ages 7 to 10.

At this stage, mathematics, English and science are studied in depth, as well as introducing subjects such as history, geography, foreign languages (including a third language from Year 4 onwards), music and physical education. The aim is to consolidate and extend the knowledge and skills acquired in Key Stage 1, preparing students for more complex academic challenges and encouraging more autonomous learning.

English subjects taught by native British teachers

Our programme of subjects in English, based on the British curriculum, is designed to immerse students in an Anglo-Saxon linguistic and cultural environment from an early age. Taught by native British teachers, these subjects provide students with a solid foundation in the language as well as a global perspective on their learning. This approach ensures that students achieve fluency in English and a broad intercultural understanding.

The subjects taught in English in the primary grades are as follows:

  • English
  • Phonics
  • Guided Reading
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • PSHE
  • Physical Education
  • Music
  • Topic. Including geography, history, art, DT and ICT.

The curriculum is completed with language and social studies in Spanish, plus a third language from Y4 onwards, with a choice of French or German.

Subjects in Spanish

The British curriculum is complemented by Spanish and Social Languages, two subjects of the Spanish curriculum, which allow the validation of studies. These subjects are taught with qualified Spanish teachers who follow the school’s learning methodology.

Those foreign students who do not have a sufficient level of Spanish can attend Spanish classes for foreigners during these classes.
