Equivalence with the British system

Key Stage 3

Key Stage 3 (KS3) in the United Kingdom covers the first three years of secondary education in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, usually for pupils aged 11 to 14, corresponding to years 7, 8 and 9.

During this period, students study a wide range of subjects, including English, Mathematics, Science, History, Geography, Foreign Languages, Technology, Art, Music and Physical Education. KS3 serves as a transitional phase and preparation for the more specialised and focused challenges of Key Stage 4. In the Spanish education system, KS3 would be equivalent to the last year of Primary Education (6th) and the two first years of Compulsory Secondary Education (1st and 2nd ESO).

Key Stage 4

Key Stage 4 (KS4) covers the final two years of secondary education in the UK, usually for students aged 14-16, covering years 10 and 11.

During this period, students prepare for their General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) examinations or equivalent. Education at KS4 is more specialized, with students typically choosing from a range of compulsory and optional subjects according to their interests and future career plans. KS4 is comparable to ESO in Spain, specifically 3rd and 4th ESO, where students also choose optional subjects and prepare for the post-compulsory stage of their education.

IGCSE examinations

IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education) examinations are international qualifications for students aged 14-16.

They are equivalent to GCSEs in the UK and include a wide range of subjects. IGCSEs, administered by the British assessment body Cambridge Assessment International Education, prepare for future academic or vocational study and are recognised globally by universities and employers, providing a solid foundation for further education.

The IGCSE is a two-year course. Students starting Year 10 in September will be tested at the end of Year 11. This makes up Key Stage 4 of the British National Curriculum.

In the United Kingdom there are several examination boards that organize and offer British IGCSE courses and exams. Schools can choose the commission they prefer, and can even select more than one if they wish. However, some examination boards do not operate outside the United Kingdom. This, in a way, restricts the options to some international schools, like ours. At the moment, we use Edexcel and Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) for most courses.

We offer a huge range of subjects and have put together a selection in line with the National Curriculum guidelines, which also provides a suitable combination of traditional and modern subjects. This ensures that the needs of all students are met, from those seeking very specific academic pathways with a view to university, to those who prefer a more vocational course. Each subject receives a grade and a certificate/diploma is awarded detailing the subjects evaluated and the grades obtained.

Validation with ESO qualifications

The validation of a British secondary school qualification in Spain, such as the GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education), with the Spanish Compulsory Secondary Education (ESO) qualification, requires an administrative process with the Spanish Ministry of Education.

In any case, the validation of a secondary education qualification from a British school in Spain, such as International School Andalucía, is a straightforward process without any administrative hurdles.
